The Pit is the name of the closest cave entrance to the deepest cave known in the Akumal Area, Is located in the Ejido Jacinto Pat and is part of the Dos Ojos Cave System. The cave provides a window into deeper “ground” layer that allows recollection of samples which may help understand better the cave formation and age. Dos Ojos Cave system is over 200 000ft / 60km of lined passages, The Pit section Max depth is 120mt/400ft; average in main deep tunnel is under 100mt/330ft.
In November 2009 the UTD Cave Exploration Team conducted a project on this cave with dives being conducted to a max depth of 110m/350' and an average of 300'/90m, with a bottom time of 2.5 hrs using the new MC Rebreather and Ratio Deco to conduct the nearly 6.5 hrs of Deco.
