I started a thread about the Essentials class on SB: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/basic-scuba-discussions/272285-fun...

There have been some folks asking some questions and some people who are talking about having had less than desired instruction in Fundies, especially with regards to helping them balance their equipment and improve their trim. Anybody want to go participate in the thread and talk about the approach to buoyancy and trim in Essentials?

Sorry Lynn, I am not going to jump onto this granade. It deteriorated into the typical discussion of right vs. wrong, gear issues, environmental destruction etc etc. The one big point that I am just not seeing, is the holistic approach with the end goal in mind: education , equipment and experience will build the community.
Most adversely-minded posters are happy with were they are - keep in mind: they will never know what they don't know. I have even seen this in other technical agencies and their programs. First a lot of criticism/skepticism and then they see what we do - followed by a nap because they had mediocer deco...

There is no winning this debate.

Andy

P.S. Just noticed that I was logged in at my girlfriend's house under her log-in but it's really me...I am not hiding behind her...
Well, when I wrote the invitation, it hadn't gotten that bad.

Still, the important thing is that it got a lot of views, and several people were happy to hear the class was being more widely offered.

One of the things I think Andrew is doing EXTREMELY right is having this website, and having the instructors visible and approachable. But there are a LOT of people out there who want this kind of education and don't even know how to start looking for it. Thus I start threads like this . . . you get a lot of static, but you also get a lot of eyeballs.
Thanks for your response, Remko! It made me go back and look at the thread, which I had really forgotten. It amused and pleased me quite a bit to discover that at least one of the most vocal critics of the class has since taken it. It reinforces to me the idea that starting threads like that is worth while, even if they sometimes seem like train wrecks while they are running.
