Unified Team Diving

There seems to be two schools of thought:

1) Bottom Time may not always include the descent if its a direct descent within five minutes until bottom is reached but the average starts at the bottom.  This is how I learned it.

2) Bottom Time includes the descent and average starts at the bottom.  This is how others learned or practice it.

I speak of no-deco dives.

Are both valid and is #1 UTD friendly?

Consistent approach in a team is the keyword here. I use (and teach) #1.

Don't bother counting time above the "break" point in the MDL table (40ft for air, 50ft for 32%). If its only a few minutes it doesn't matter in the grand scheme. If its 12mins just to reach 50ft (e.g.) then you can disregard. It ends up being not relevant to your total gas loadings.

Same applies to deco dives BTW, except we start counting when we pass the last deco gas. I don't think this would be wise if for some reason you brought a 190ft bottle for a 240ft dive, its more of a general idea for normal ocean dives.
