Unified Team Diving

Hey all--

Just listened to Andrew's video blog (nice job this week in terms of presentation). He was talking about the 1 day "endorsement" to use two deco bottles.

It is funny because I've been thinking a fair amount about the value of using O2 in that fashion--particularly in situations like where I am up in remote Canada, two ferries away from Vancouver, and doing multiple tech dives. The added cushion of O2 in terms of cleaning up is beneficial there.

My question: who can teach? Is this something Trimix 1 instructors can do? Or, can a Tech 2 instructor do this? With Brian locally, I'd love to use this as a day to go out and have him beat on me . . . or at least show me how not to kill myself with two deco bottles.

Hi Doug,

This endorsement can be added by a UTD Tech 2 instructor. The thing to remember though, is the instructor has a lot of latitude in who they sign off for two bottles at the Tech 2 level. The prerequisites are just that, prerequisites. It's up to the instructor's judgment as to whether the student is ready, both from a skills standpoint and a responsibility standpoint.

The endorsement is in the next revision of the Standards and Procedures. The revision is being completed and should be on the web in the next two or three weeks...we'll announce it when it's posted.

Best,

Jeff
Thanks for the clarification Jeff,

Yes, the latitude and judgment part makes a ton of sense. I've been at the tech 2 level for about a year now, and have had times where two deco bottles (because of cleaning up on O2) would have made sense.

I think it is great that you guys are shaping the curriculum around how people actually dive--good stuff.
