I recently heard someone say that calibrating an oxygen analyzer using ambient air at altitude might not be wise.  They suggested calibrating the analyzer using compressed air.

 

This surprised me, since I thought that the percentage of oxygen would remain the same at altitude even if the PPO2 would be lower.

 

Can any fill me in on how the oxygen sensor actually works as it relates to this issue?

Oxygen sensors measure the PPO2, not the percentage. Analyzers convert to a percentage using standard values for altitude, temperature and humidity. Corrections for these usually come on a chart with the analyzer and are usually thrown away by the consumer.
