Unified Team Diving

Greetings! After completing Rec2 (not there yet) I had planned to eventually take Rec3 and then one day Tech 1. I was reading the class descriptions and Tech 1 actually sounds like Rec2 + Rec3 + single deco bottle. Why then would people take Rec3 instead of Tech 1? It seems like it would just be more advantagous to take Tech 1 and spend more than 15 minutes at 130' with some deco.

Anyway, I'm just trying to figure out if it is the right path to take Rec3 and then Tech 1, seems redundant.

Also, if one were to persue UTD dive master down the road, would Tech 1 count as Rec3 in terms of ability to participate in an official capacity?

I'd suggest you get through Rec 2, then do a bunch of dives at that level, THEN you'll find yourself in a better position to decide if Rec 3 or Tech 1 is the better choice.

Hi Shawn,

Rec 3 and Tech 1 are very different in where they lead. For divers who want to stay at recreational depths in single tanks, Rec 3 is perfect, because it teaches proper ascent strategies and offers a little helium for clearer thinking in the 100-130 foot range.

Tech 1 is very much a prep class for Tech 2. We split Tech 1 and Tech 2 so students had a productive (and certified) way to buy helium and 100% O2 and do a little deco while spending valuable time diving a tech configuration, getting used to the deco bottle, and feeling the pressure to do perfect buoyancy on deco. Rec 3 are different classes with different goals.

Our Divemaster program (which will be rolling out shortly) is a leadership program, not a dive training program. Once certified as a UTD Divemaster, you can work in that capacity up to your level of dive training, so if you're UTD Tech 1, you can DM to Tech 1 levels, and so on.

Best,

Jeff
