Hey Rock Lake divers, I am diving strictly sidemount and have some gear to sell: double 85's with bands and mannifold and filled with 25:25, SS backplate and double wing. Let me know if anyone is interested.
Because we are curious -
As all know, we have spent a good deal of the last few years exploring the unique feature known as Rock Lake in New Mexico. We have begun a 3D map, had geologic samples collected and analyzed and now - we have a mention in Scientific American by one of our very own:
Note that I did not actually take these pictures, they are courtesy of Burt Ericsson who took them at my behest to attempt to get an identification.
Hi all! Sorry, was delayed in getting to this forum. Yes, I have a houseboat on Lake Powell, but it is at Bullfrog Marina. That is about 100 "water miles" up the lake. I would guess it is a several hundred mile trip by car, due to a lack of a direct route.
I have dived there, but only once. The vis was okay (by Colorado standards: 25-40 ft) but I didn't go deep. Around 40' max (I was diving solo).
The owner of Divers Reef here in Colo Spgs dives out of Page often (he has inlaws who live in the Page area). He just loads up a bunch of shop tanks, since he has access to them.
I bought a small 3.5 cubic-foot gasoline powered compressor specifically to use for diving at Powell. I haven't even set it up, since I get free air fills at Divers Reef. Due to lack of a dive buddy, my diving there has been limited, and I have a set of doubles, and 5 AL-80s plus a small pony that are plenty for me at this time.
I would be up to scheduling a week on the Houseboat (out of Bullfrog), but not this fall. I'm scheduled for a total hip replacement surgery in October, and suspect I'll not be diving the rest of this year.
I can add that I have been down there in Oct, and the weather has been beautiful, and I've also been down there in Oct when it rained constantly, and I wore long underwear and a down coat under my uniform when on patrol (open boat) and we took turns standing in front of the only cat heater on the houseboat (since removed) to try and warm up. It sounds like you're planning on staying in a hotel in the Page area, so that wouldn't be as much of a problem. At that time, we didn't have the new cold weather gear now available. Wet and cold with no place to get warm is not fun.
I just found out that Twin Fins no longer fills tanks in Page. I think that we need to find a portable compressor.
A house boat would be the ultimate way to go on Powell. Does Rick know we are commandeering his boat?
