Cave divers are for sure very opinionated people but it is very important to me that we can discuss all together about lines and ideas.
The past years the Riviera Maya was kind of a caos due to unauthorized changes on lines and markers.
The local cave diving community is trying to keep a more consistent way of keeping lines and markers in the caves.
I really would like to keep politics and ego a part to be able to re install lines and markers that need to be re installed for safety reason without mentions names and stories that in my opinion will be just a lost of time.
So this new discussion is for every visiting or local cave diver that dives the cave of Riviera Maya to express their concern or suggestion that I can bring up to the Q.Roo safety officer comite meeting, after that I will of course post a pubblic update on decision and if any changes made.
Please again let's just thing about safety and conservation and let's try to leave politics out of this group!
Safe diving

Permalink Reply by Daniel Anderson on December 10, 2011 at 8:36am Great start! I am looking forward to visiting Cave Heaven in January and seeing all the work you both have done. Congratulations on the recognition of your enthusiasm and love of the caves in your new role as UTD Safety Officer. I will look forward to reading the upcoming reports.
Permalink Reply by James Williams on December 10, 2011 at 3:42pm I'm happy with anything that is simple, yet safe. I personally like permanent line that has a contrasting color from the cave and the typical cave divers line on their reel and spools. I also line permanent line markers contrasting in color and size from the typical cave divers arrows. So far me, gold line and a slightly larger colored arrow (keeping the size and color consistent in all systems) marking exits and jumps would make the most sense, while keeping it simple. :)
Of course, that would be a lot easier in touristy cave systems, but in systems with active exploration, that wouldn't work as well. What ever approach is taken, just keep it simple and consistent. :)

@ James : I am of the same idea, the only argument down here is that if you are following a thinner line you are more likely to stay closer to it which is safer and very good for cave conservation, even if I agree with this philosophy as well, I think we all should be responsabile for safety and conservation no matter the color and thickness of the line and this is excatly why we teach diver to be "THINKING CAVE DIVER" !
Most of all I (as many of you) would like to have consistency on lines and markers and NOT keep changing them without advise!
Keeps the comments coming and I will report them all !
