Chris Again, this has become a "slugfest". As I clearly stated, I want to keep things educational and not destructive. As Nick A pointed out with his post, you clearly do not understand bailout, decompression, contingencies or diving mixed teams (…

So if you dive 18/45 or 15/55 to 150 do you adjust your deco ? Which is the main reason we teach in OC to carry Nitrox 50% - not for better decompression but for better gas management. In this case, we had ample backgas to bailout to get to 20' to…

Not to continue this derailment too far :) Deco planner (20/85) 150 for 30 (omitting the He) with 100% O2, Runtime 70 mins, deco 37 With just 50%:: Runtime 68 mins, deco 35 mins VPM+2 (21/35) 100% O2 Runtime 69 mins 50% RT 64 mins So in the "bes…

Chris, Please keep this thread on track. You were not asking about planning a dive, you were asking about an emergency decompression profile in the case of a catastrophic failure (Nitorx 50 bottle "exploding"). All of the responses here reflect the…

Chris, you are a smart guy, where do you think the usage by (say) GUE of 50% might come from(even if these days they may be reluctant to discuss that topic) ? AG is not comparing 50% to BG deco here, he is saying the reason to choose 50% over 100% f…

Chris As I tried to explain earlier 1:1 ratio deco is based on "One" O2 window. So, in Tech 1 we do that window at 20'/6m on O2 as the rock bottom from 130' and shallower is feasible. As you go deeper we need a 70'/21m bottle so as not to make Rock…

If UTD is teaching that 50% is being added only (mainly?) for min gas reasons and not for accelerated decompression, then I guess we're at an impasse. Which is the main reason we teach in OC to carry Nitrox 50% - not for better decompression but fo…

Chris While I certainly understand your question and will take the time to answer it, I wanted to make sure that we keep this positive and a learning experience, not a slugfest. So to that end, I want to say that diving, like decompression, is ve…

About me:
Andrew Georgitsis began diving in 1986, although his love of the water stemmed from childhood and some might say was genetic. He became an avid swimmer and competitive water polo player in South Africa before immigrating to Seattle, Washington where he took up scuba diving. Over the last fifteen years, he has taught thousands of divers around the world and continues to share his knowledge, skill, and passion for the underwater environment as an active instructor and explorer.
Most recently, Andrew has found a new home in the Bay area and is looking forward to building a friendly dive community while remaining committed to the UTD philosophy and providing students with diver education that is second to none. Andrew will also continue to pursue his exploration dreams around the world and provide like-minded divers with opportunities for unique diving experiences. How do I dive within a mixed UTD/DIR team? (OC and mCCR)

Recently there has been a lot of discussion about how a UTD/DIR diver might deal with a mixed team of rebreather divers - either pSCR or now mCCR - and open circuit divers on the same team or dive operation. So, I thought I would put together a little blog outlining some of the things to consider while bringing in some of my now over 10 years of diving a rebreather in a DIR/UTD configuration, many times on a mixed team.

Sure, in the late 90's it was the first Halcyon pSCR Rebreather,… Continue

Clarifying Stage Bottle Markings vs Deco Bottle Markings

Stage Bottles are generally a larger volume Aluminum bottle (80cft/11L) that we fill with the same gas as our backgas for that particular dive. In other words it is a standardized bottom gas that is safe to breath at the deepest depth you will be diving and is really an extension of the “back gas.” It is always breathable during the dive and therefore there is no risk of switching to it even if by accident.

Therefore it is filled, analyzed and marked the same as

UTD Signature Series Equipment

UTD Signature Series Equipment

So, why do a UTD Signature Series Equipment Line?

Four years ago I was very frustrated with my training agency at that time, for not having training materials that support the way I dive and support my training philosophies. So I decided to develop training DVD's that became very popular among the DIR/GUE/Hogarthian crowd. Later I added Power Points and other support materials for… Continue

MC Rebreather Iphone Checklist App

Guys

I wanted to share with you a little about the UTD mCCR Iphone Checklist App that is available on the Iphone App Store. As you well know, setting up and verifying everything in a rebreather is of utmost importance. We must use a checklist to not only ensure that we do everything correctly but to have a log of our mV and O2 sensors use as well as our battery voltages and scrubber usage and so on. This wonderful new Iphone app not only helps us stay organized and ensures that we checkoff each… Continue

Hello from Akumal. Hoping to find some good info about UTD. I've been a PADI instructor for 10 years and I think I need an impulse in my career. There is a GUE school here, so I thought maybe there is room for a UTD training ground!!!
Looking forward to some good chats

Alexander has just finished school and is 6' 4". We took the kids to Vietnam for 24 days over Christmas - lots of limestone caves. Did no diving but it looks interesting down near Na Trang.
Sandy is doing her second year of a fine arts degree at National Art School.
Take care big fella. South Africa just beat Australia in the last over of the first game of the one day series - bugger!
