About me:
James Mott is an instructor for Unified Team Diving International, a DIR based training agency that is committed to building thinking divers. A veteran of the Great Lakes area diving community, James started working at Don’s Dive Shop in 1991 just two years after learning how to scuba dive and has managed Sea The World Scuba Center since its opening in 1996. James’ heart lies beneath the cold waters of the Great Lakes along with the ship wrecks that he loves diving, in addition he also has a new found love for Florida’s cave diving and an occasional dip in shark infested waters. Passionate about educating the diving community and sharing an underwater philosophical base, James’ instruction provides infinite possibilities and extends attainable excellence to all divers willing to reexamine their underwater behavior.

Recognizing The Purpose

What is the purpose of taking a class, in particular a UTD class? Is it to receive another card, gain access to a deeper depth, to stay down longer or to go further? Should we enter a class with these thoughts as our goals? Or should these achievements be the bonus we get for improving something even better? The education at UTD strives to teach our students something more than just the namesake of a class.

There is a pretty severe line that separates success from failure and too many developin… Continue

Maybe Next Time!

It’s all about paying your dues. I learned many years ago that there was, no such thing as a free lunch, but at $5.95 for a burger, fries and tall draft beer, I’ve gotten pretty close. The winds will not let us dive today. So there I sit, bellied-up to the bar at a local harbor town tavern, my dive team and I toast another round to the sea gods of yesteryear and ask for permission, next time… maybe.

The Great Lakes hold secure the finest treasures a shipwreck diver can seek. These prizes are ve… Continue

REC 2, Success is Worth the Struggle

I was trying to find a quote that could sum up what we all just went through during my last UTD Recreational 2 class. I had two guys who were very enthusiastic, great spirits, strongly committed but just needed a little more work.
The last Recreational 2 class started off with a lot of issues that needed attention. The UTD program demands the best from our students, granted it is specific to their level… but we still expect a student to perform to a certain ability in or order to achieve a certi… Continue

Recreational 2 Report

Recreational 2

April 10-12 was a beautiful spring weekend up here in Michigan and made for some spectacular experience dives for my recent Recreational 2 students, Joe and Josh Hohner. We did the dives at three separate locations, Union Lake, Spring Mill Pond and Gilboa Quarry. Union and Spring Mill gave us about 20ft of visibility, but the experience dives at Gilboa were absolutely amazing. Sunday morning the sun was shining, skies were blue and the viz was 60-80ft+, WOW!

Three days and six d… Continue

Economic Decompression

My fellow scuba divers,
Listening to the news recently, I was shivering and shaking, hiding under the blanket with just my eyes peeking out to watch the report on the state of the world’s economy and how doomed we all were. Then if that wasn’t scary enough… the weather forecast came on next, don’t we ever get a break?!?!
But today as I was driving into the dive shop in 8 inches of show, and I got to thinking… this isn’t that bad. I’ve driven in much worse than this, and then I thought to myself,… Continue

Hi James, thanks for the welcome! I've only recently learned about UTD and DIR, but I like what looks like a disciplined and thorough approach. Will definitely be getting in touch with my local instructor.

Hi James, Thanks for the welcome email. I met you a few times at Sea the World when I lived in Brighton, not sure if you remember. I took the Fundamentals class with Brandon and Scot back in 07 and dove the local lakes with Scuba Cult that summer. I've since moved back to South Florida and am looking to move my training forward. I'm very excited about UTD and looking forward to getting started. Oh and BTW, congratulations on your appointment as a UTD instructor! A nice accomplishment for you. Sincerely, Ray

James,
Thanks for the hello! I feel so alone here in Texas, not many UTD/DIR divers in the Houston area. This is the primary reason I decided to join UTD and take the tech 1 & 2 course through George Watson in CO, he is the closest instructor to me. I look forward to becoming more involved with UTD in the future. Thanks again
